We've seen a lot of weird and useless things marketed on eBay in the past, but this one could be considered the most ridiculous item to go on sale on the popular auction site. An Australia-based seller has put up the word “the” on sale, advertising it as a “versatile word that can be used in literally thousands of sentences.”

The word is handwritten with a blue ballpoint pen on a torn piece of Reflex A4 paper, and as much as I try, I cannot find anything special to it. However, the eBay user who posted the ad says that the on sale item is the ideal accessory for everything from potted plants to a piano.

While bidding for the word, or the piece of paper with the word on it, began at 99 cents, so far eager buyers have placed bids tipping $93 (€68), with four days left until the end of the auction.

“Ideal for any situation, this fun-loving item fits perfectly in the palm of your hand, wallet, or purse,” the description of the item reads. “Can be used to wipe the fog from a snorkel and is timeless when placed in a puppy and rabbit scenario. It's a popular word for the whole family.”

And to illustrate their claims, the seller has also posted photos that show the torn piece of paper adorning different objects, like a MacBook laptop, a piano, a wallet and a snorkel.
