CD Projekt RED wants players to explore choices and consequences

Michal Platkow-Gilewsk, one of the co-founders of CD Projekt RED, says that comparisons between the upcoming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are inevitable, but his team will take an entirely different approach to game world creation.

The developer tells Rock, Paper, Shotgun that “What they created was an open-world RPG. What we’re doing is a story-driven RPG set in an open-world environment. For us, the most important aspect of the game is always the story.”

The team says that good and evil, gray moral choices and consequences have always been a defining characteristic of the world of The Witcher and Wild Hunt will show how they can all come together organically to power the story of Geralt.

Michal Platkow-Gilewsk adds, “It’s a big challenge, but we’ve identified all the tricky parts of it, and we’re working hard to give a great storytelling experience in this open world. As far as asking what will be the consequences of your actions, there will be a lot of them.”

In Skyrim, the big story threads, from the new dragon threat to the battle between Empire and Nords, could feel disconnected from the smaller quests that player explored in cities and in the countryside.

For The Witcher 3, CD Projekt RED wants to make sure that smaller actions can have huge consequences in order to force players to pay attention to everything that happens around them.

The team says that it has already created 36 full end states for the game world, all of them the result of the major choices that a player will be able to make as Geralt.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will take more than 50 hours to complete and will feature an open world and re-designed combat system.

The story will tie up all the loose ends that the series has created so far.
