CD Project RED has just announced that The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition is now available for the Linux platform.

Rumors about a Linux port for The Witcher 2 have been floating around for a couple of months and the game was even present in the Steam for Linux library for a few days. It was featured in the Steam Database and it was just a matter of time until it became available for Linux.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is a very hardware-intensive title and porting it couldn't have been easy, especially because it comes packed with many technologies that are not used in any other Linux games.

“We’re really pumped to be able to invite RPG fans who use Linux to the party. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is one of the greatest fantasy adventures on Linux, and I’m sure every role-playing enthusiast with a craving for some quality questing will have tons of fun playing the game!” said Marcin Momot, community manager, CD PROJEKT RED.

The fact that CD PROJEKT RED announced the game for Linux is even more surprising because this is the same company behind GOG.com, another digital distribution service. They too have said that they intend to support the Linux platform starting this autumn, and everyone expected to see The Witcher 2 launched in a few months’ time.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition follows the adventures of Geralt of Rivia, a witcher that’s on the run after being wrongfully accused of killing the king of Temeria. This is an open world RPG that features impressive graphics, a unique fighting system that allows gamers to choose very different paths for the development of the character, and an amazing story based on the works of Andrzej Sapkowski.

This is easily one of the best games of its kind and there are very few titles that even come close to the quality level that you will find in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. There is one caveat though.

The developers from CD Project RED have explained that the game will not run on AMD hardware and that they are working with AMD engineers to fix this problem. The rest of you out there who want to play it must have Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB of RAM, 25 GB HD space, and at least a GeForce 9800 512MB video card.

If you really want to see what The Witcher 2 is capable of, then you will definitely need a quad-core Intel processor, 4 GB of RAM, 25 GB of HD space, and at least a GeForce GT 640 1GB video card. Also, you need to know that the game will not work on Intel integrated graphics chipsets.

Happy gaming!
