The game was even downloading until a week ago on Steam for Linux

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, the action RPG game developed by CD Project, has disappeared from the Steam library of Linux games.

Linux gamers were surprised to see that The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings appeared out of nowhere in the Steam for Linux library, which would normally indicate that a Linux version was very close to a launch. Even more, the Linux users were also allowed to download most of the game and only the binaries were missing.

Unfortunately, the game has been removed from the active list of games and users can't download the content anymore. The content itself was worthless without the binaries, but at least it gave people hope that the Linux version was close.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition is still present in the Steam database, which could mean that the presence in the Steam library was actually a mistake.

The developers of The Witcher franchise, CD Project, are also responsible for the GOG.com digital distribution service, which has just announced that it will also support Linux games. GOG.com will launch its new Linux platform in the fall of 2014 and it has promised some new Linux games. It would have been weird to launch The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings on Steam before making it available on its own service.

Most likely, we will get to play The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings after the launch of GOG.com for Linux.
