It seems that gyroscopic devices are becoming more and more popular, especially with the launch of Nintendo's famous Wii gaming console and its even more famous gyro controller, the Wiimote. That's the reason more and more
companies are jumping aboard the "things you control by waving in the air" bandwagon, and the latest addition to this group is the Japanese Buffalo company, who has just announced the BOMU-W24A/BL, a special dual mouse, that can operate both on a flat surface on in the air.
As you probably suspect already, the "airborne" capability is provided by the built-in gyro sensor that tracks the device's movements and transmits them to a USB dongle inserted in a computer's USB port. However, this gyro-mouse also sports an optical sensor, and that's why it can be used as a normal mouse on a daily basis (albeit most normal mouses don't have 6 buttons, as this one does, but that's a whole different story). The BOMU-W24A/BL works on the 2.4GHz band, which is getting pretty crowded, as more and more devices are using it in order to prevent interference with GSM and WiFi networks, and has a range of 10 meters, quite enough for a presentation or even for playing World of Warcraft while resting on your couch.
The Wiimote-like mouse from Buffalo works on internal rechargeable batteries, which are powered via a cradle, and comes with a special software, called Gyrotool, that allows the user to maximize its range of uses. And speaking of utility, it's quite clear that the Gyrotool can be safely used for various activities, but it is especially suited for making presentations. The device will be launched later on this month in Japan, and will be available for around 19 780 Yen (131 Euro), which is quite a hefty price for a 1'st generation device, if you ask me.
