Developers Hammerpoint Games and Arktos Entertainment have announced that they are working on a new zombie survival MMO called The War Z, which will allow players to take on the role of a survivor of a zombie apocalypse who needs to get the resources and the companions required in order to survive.

Sergey Titov, who is the executive producer working on the game, tells IGN that, “We started thinking about doing a zombie game last year and began developing a quest-based MMO set in a large, zombie-infested world. Players would be able to explore and unlock new areas on the map as they progress through quests assigned to them in-game.”

The War Z is set five years after the zombie apocalypse and gamers will be able to roam around a large game world and get information about what has happened from a range of notes, diaries, graffiti, initially created by the development team and then enhanced by the other players.

The MMO will be launched with one game world, called Colorado, and the team already has others designed, all of them based on real-world locations.

Titov reports, “We want players to see the signs of struggle and destruction from humans fighting with zombies and have that sense of fear and anxiety when they are exploring the world.”

“Additionally, aside from having different characters to play and some other mechanics that we think will really set WarZ apart, the other key difference is that, being a standalone game, it will be much more accessible in terms of being able to buy, download, install, log into a server and play,” he adds.

The developer acknowledges that the popularity of the Day Z mod for ArmA 2 has spurred the development team to reveal their own project, which at the moment lacks a clear launch date.
