You don't necessarily have to be a sommelier in order to know that your wine will change its taste after you've left that bottle opened for several days. It is a simple law of nature that makes all sorts of foods and beverages alter their taste, color or aroma in contact with the oxygen present in the air. Peeled potatoes turn black, apple slices turn brown as they oxidize and the list of examples could go on forever. Yet, there is a major difference between throwing away an apple and a bottle of your favorite and presumably not-that-cheap wine; and that's why wine stoppers have been invented.

Now, at first it looked like these wine stoppers were a very good idea, as they kept the air (and, most important, the oxygen in it) away form the beverage. Yet, the wines in the stopped bottles still changed their properties and altered their taste... because of the air trapped inside the containers.

And to solve this problem, vacuum wine stoppers and pumps have been invented. These tiny but so useful gadgets look almost like any stopper out there, and for the untrained eye they could easily pass as some fancier corks people use to cover their bottles after opening them. Much to the wine-lovers' joy, the reality is different: these stoppers act like a diminutive pump that will take almost all the air out of the bottle in whose neck they've been installed, thus eliminating most of the oxygen that would otherwise be trapped in there.

Creating a vacuum that will last for up to 6 days, this wine stopper allows you to enjoy the true taste of your fav wine for a longer period of time

That's why, in the absence of said air/oxygen, the wine will keep its taste and fragrance for a longer period of time; and the particular vacuum wine stopper we've stumbled upon promises up to six days of prolonged sipping pleasure if used correctly. If you're the kind of a person who will open a wine bottle and drink it dry, it may prove that this vacuum stopper will not be of great use to you. But if you like to extend your wine-tasting habits over more than one day, you should really consider this gadget.

The Vacuum Wine Stopper is made from non-allergenic food-safe plastic and will not affect the taste or smell of your precious drink. You can get it for $35 here and we'd also like to mention that it could really make a nifty present for a friend of yours who likes wine.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
