For the most part, the top most downloaded artist is different from country to country, apart from one special case.
What's more, the top most downloaded artist tends to be a local one, though that's far from being a rule. Drake takes the title in the US, not that surprising perhaps.
While he's not exactly a local artist, no one in the US really is apart from country singers maybe, Drake is still a lot more popular and known in the US than everywhere else.
In the UK though, the country with the second most pirates, it's Ed Sheeran, a local artist, who took the honors. He's got a best-selling album in the UK, but is relatively unknown elsewhere.
In Italy, the third biggest country by music downloads on BitTorrent, Laura Pausini was the most downloaded artist. Again, a local artist took the top spot.
It's only in Canada, the fourth country on the list, where a foreign artist takes the first place, Kanye West.
In Brazil, dubstep producer Billy Van took first place, but he's the special case we told you about, since he gives away his music for free and encourages fans to grab it from torrent sites.
Moving down the list, the rule is enforced, in Australia Hilltop Hoods is the most downloaded, a local hip hop group, in Spain it's Pablo Alboran, in India it's Billy Van again, in France it's Sexion d'assaut.
It's only in the 10th place country where a foreign artist takes the top spot, Maroon 5 in Philippines. Other artists that break the rule are Birdy in the Netherlands, Gotye in Poland and Pitbull in Hungary. That's not accounting for Billy Van who places in the top spot in India, Greece and Romania, besides Brazil.
