With the year coming to an end, we've seen all manner of search engines highlight the top queries and trends of the year. TorrentFreak focused on the BitTorrent scene. With data from KickassTorrents, one of the biggest up-and-coming BitTorrent indexers out there, the BitTorrent Zeitgeist 2010 was created.

The top 100 searches paint a picture of what users are looking for and indicate what BitTorrent is used for most often. Movies are a big part of the appeal, dominating the top 10 as well as the entire list.

Inception was the year's biggest hit with BitTorrent users it seems as it was the top query on the site. The fact that a higher quality pirate version of the movie didn't come out for a few months after its release probably helped propel it to the number one spot as many users likely searched for the movie repeatedly but chose to skip downloading it until something better than a "cam" version was available.

"Iron Man 2" is the second biggest search of the year. James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster Avatar is the next movie title in the top 100, at number six. Moving down the list, Despicable Me is at number eight and Clash of the Titans closes the top 10 in the last spot.

More generic terms, related to movies, also dominated the searches with "2010" at number three and "dvdrip" at number seven, indicating that BitTorrent users prefer higher quality versions and the latest releases.

An interesting entry is "french" at number five. The query would suggest that French users weren't that deterred by the tougher anti-piracy laws instituted in France this year or, perhaps, French users prefer this particular BitTorrent search engine.

And, of course, a couple of classic "adult" searches round up the top 10. Note that the stats don't necessarily reflect the entire BitTorrent landscape and the data may not be entirely accurate, but it should give an idea of what people searched for in 2010. The full top 100 is available here.
