The countdown to 2012 is on and with only 10 days left in the year, everyone is looking back. YouTube is doing the same and in a really big way. Given the size of the site, there really was no other way to do it.

YouTube has set up a special Rewind channel to feature all of the videos that went viral this year. From Nyan Cat to Rebecca Black, they're all in there.

"To compile these lists, we looked at global view counts of popular videos uploaded throughout this year, and, in some instances, we aggregated views across multiple versions of the same video," YouTube explained.

"2011 was a year of amazing new channels and new stars being discovered, awesome creativity, and of course, Rebecca Black," it said.

"It was also a year of powerful news stories playing out on YouTube, as people witnessed and documented uprisings and natural disasters, touching personal moments and moments of protest," it added.

To give you an idea of the scale of YouTube and the type of competition that all new videos face, there were more than one trillion, that's 1,000,000,000,000, views on YouTube this year, 140 for anyone on Earth, as YouTube eloquently exemplifies.

That said, one video rose above everything else on YouTube, the one, the only Friday as made famous by Rebecca Black. It ended up with well over 100 million views, though the counter on the current video doesn't show it.

Without further ado, there are the top 10 most viewed videos of the year on YouTube:
