Google’s I/O conference is not far from us, and we expect to see the tech giant unveil the heavily rumored Nexus 8 tablet during the event.

But other surprises might be ready, waiting for us at the venue. For example, it is high time Google refreshed its Chromebook Pixel, with a second iteration. Think about it – a Chromebook Pixel 2 coming with a Haswell chip, improved battery life, a lighter frame, and if it’s not asking too much, multiple variants.

Most Chromebook models today do not offer a touchscreen, so it might not be a bad idea for Google to cut down on the price of the original device which sold for $1,299 / €954, by taking the touchscreen out of the Chromebook Pixel 2 equation.

Google could adopt Samsung’s strategy in the display department and offer a regular HD model with a more affordable price and a more advanced model featuring full HD resolution.

Bottom line is that most Chromebooks are considered cheap laptops with average specs suited for students, but the Chromebook Pixel was different.

The original device arrived with a 12.85-inch IPS screen boasting a resolution of 2560 x 1700 pixels, while under the hood an Intel Core i5 Ivy Bridge with Panther Point PHC ran the show, accompanied by 4GB of RAM.

Anyway, Google could lower the bar a little bit and still offer a worthy Chromebook at a decent price, which would still be placed above other Chrome-OS laptops available today.
