If you haven't had enough of the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD "soap opera", then you would be interested to know that, according to DigiTimes.com, the Taiwanese optical disc producers said that the HD-DVD is more to their liking that the Blu-Ray alternative.
The HD-DVD technology has more aspects in common with current
DVDs and that is why the adapting of the production lines to the requirements of the future format implies lower costs compared to the costs for the migration towards Blu-Ray.
Although Toshiba never misses the opportunity to stress that, so far, nobody knows the exact sums implied by this migration, the only information available being that manufacturing the Blu-Ray discs would require two to four times more money compared to the HD-DVD.
The HD-DVD has received a heavy blow when Fox Entertainment announced its support for Blu-Ray and the Taiwanese producers' statement might counterbalance the effect produced by Blu-Ray's new ally. On the other hand, according to the same DigiTimes.com, the Taiwanese producers said that they will also manufacture Blu-Ray, if it will become a standard. In other words, "We love you HD-DVD, but business is business".
Let's hope that by the end of the year, at least one of the formats will be available on the market.
