Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of the South Park animation series and writers of the game based on it, say that the original script for the virtual adventure was 850 pages long and needed to be trimmed down after talks with developer Obsidian.

Polygon cites the pair as saying that they initially thought about the possibility of taking all the extra bits of the story and integrating them into the television series.

Parker says, "We did have this whole delusion of actually incorporating the game into the season. We really just wanted it to be that you could pick it up anywhere and it would kind of make sense."

Apparently, the current plan is to simply take the script and create more episodes for the game based on it, because both Parker and Stone consider downloadable content to be a poor use of the story that they have created.

On first seeing the 850-page script, the team at Obsidian told the pair that such a complex game could only be launched in 2032, urging them to reduce the story to a more manageable size.

The two creators have also offered information on their inspiration for The Stick of Truth, citing Skyrim, Paper Mario, Earthbound and The Legend of Zelda.

The mechanics of the four series are pretty different and it will be interesting to see how the South Park game reflects each of them.

Parker adds, "I really loved playing Skyrim, as many people did. I was like 'Let’s do this. This is easy'."

The Stick of Truth has been in development for some time at Obsidian and at the moment, the game does not have a launch date.

Currently, publishing duties are being handled by Ubisoft and the game is expected to arrive on the PC, the current generation of consoles, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.
