Up until now, it seemed that Spider-Man was sort of the black sheep of the Marvel empire, with some less than successful films and without the opportunity to cross-feature in other stories in the Marvel Universe.

Now, with the proven success of spinoffs like Wolverine, Sony has announced plans to turn Venom and Sinister Six into separate movies.

In a press release, Sony Studios announce that they have put together a team of writers in order to try and expand the Spider-Man universe. The most obvious choices for that are the fan-favorite anti-hero Venom and the popular Sinister Six.

In addition to Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who have worked together on the storyline in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” the team will also be comprised of Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon and Drew Goddard.

Pinkner is known for his work on TV shows such as “Lost,” “Fringe” and “Alias,” while Solomon has worked on the film “Now You See Me” and Goddard collaborated with Joss Whedon.

Kurtzman, Orci and Pinkner are already working on the screenplay for “The Amazing Spider-Man 3,” after which Kurzman, Orci and Solomon will be getting to work on the “Venom” movie. Goddard will be taking the helm on the “Sinister Six” project.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 3” is already billed to be released in cinemas on June 10, 2016 and has a production date set for next fall. Questions as to how the team will be able to juggle two more side projects will have to be answered in time.

Sony is probably banking on the success of “The Avengers,” which also spurred another cross-over, the highly anticipated “Batman vs. Superman,” the first attempt of this kind in the DC Comics universe. There are also plans to bring the characters of X-Men into the same movie with the “Fantastic 4,” probably in an effort to appeal to ever-increasing audiences.

Time will tell if Sony will be able to do justice to Spidey and his fans.
