The Spice Girls made their first appearance as a reunited group at the Victoria Secret's lingerie show in Los Angeles last night. And since they were in Hollywood, the show also had to be worthy of the ways and expectations of the Tinseltown dwellers, so the girls treated their guests to two glamorous costume changes (courtesy of Roberto Cavalli) and some pretty wild dance moves, not to mention the whole "smiling and posing" part. So yes, it was a good show, and the audience (which included Enrique Iglesias, Eva Longoria, Hilary and Haylie Duff, Hayden Panettiere, Slash and Jason Statham) seemed to love it to death. Well, then we'll take their word for it.
It's interesting to note, though, how a band that was supposed to be all about the music agreed to make pretty much the biggest compromise there is in the business in that department and decide to lipsynch. And if we can pretty much forgive and forget that for the first of the two songs they performed, their hit single "'Stop" (which involved a pretty energetic dance routine), they don't really have an excuse for the second song, their new single "Headlines", which is a ballad.
We can probably put the not singing live part down to nerves, as it's the first time they hit the stage in over 7 years. Mel C admitted the girls were "nervous". She said: "It's quite surreal, but everything has come flooding back, all of the songs, and being with each other and rehearsing together, it just feels very comfortable. We have got nothing to prove. We just want to come back and live out the good old days". "It's very emotional to be back on stage together, it evokes a lot of memories", 31-year-old Emma Bunton added.
Things have changed a lot since those days, though - and the five Spice Girls are every inch the divas now, dramatically slimmed down and wearing designer clothes. At least one of the girls, however, doesn't seem to agree. "We've never been divas", says Mel C. "Our reputation in the business is that we all work very hard and we know that we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for everybody who was involved in our project". Looking forward to seeing how the world tour will go for the girls - and whether they will take on the challenge of singing live any time soon.
