It seems that the boy bands and the girl bands of the '90s are coming back "to haunt" us. First the Backstreet Boys decided that they could not make it big separately, then the remaining four members of Take That tried (with some success) to relive the long-lost glory days. And now the Spice Girls are planning a reunion as well.
You gotta give them credit for
the 55 million albums sold worldwide. The Spice Girls were on fire when Geri Halliwell left the band in 1998 to pursue a solo career. Ginger Spice cited differences with her bandmates. This happened just before a sold-out world tour. The remaining girls managed to complete all the gigs and then released "Forever" in 2000, the last Spice Girls album to date. After that, all the girls attempted solo musical careers, but only Sporty Spice Melanie C managed to obtain some recognition.
When asked why the Spice Girls waited for so long to reunite, Melanie C answered that what they had back in the 1990's was something special that could never be relived again. Well, having publicly said that, I am curious why on Earth are they reuniting now?
Melanie C is quick to answer to this question as well. It seems that with Geri leaving the band in 1998, the girls did not get to say farewell in a proper way. And that's what this reunion should be all about. The girls getting together to say goodbye.
Don't kid yourself, dearie, this is all about money and you know it. Each of the five girls will earn several million pounds for their Greatest Hits album coming up later this year and the six live shows they will perform around the world, with gigs in London, Las Vegas and Tokyo. Having failed individually, the Spice Girls will try to make some dough on their brand name.
Under these circumstances, it doesn't seem such a bad idea. Posh Spice Victoria Beckham is not in need of money but she is such a media whore that she cannot pass this up. Scary Spice Melanie B needs to show herself and the world that she is not a loser after Eddie Murphy knocked her up and would not even see her daughter. Geri Halliwell could use the positive media attention for once. I'm not gonna say anything bad about Sporty Spice Melanie C because she is the only band member that can actually sing, while Baby Spice Emma Bunton chose to keep a low profile after her solo musical career failed to take off.
The Spice Girls will be announcing their reunion later today at the O2 Arena in south-east London. Stay tuned for the details.
