The Spice Girls' New Single Tanks

The Spice Girls' comeback single is struggling in the UK charts, and it has become obvious that it's not enjoying the same kind of success as their previous singles from their days of glory - which made it to number one with only one exception ("Stop"). The group's new song "Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)" has only made it to a disappointing number 10 in the midweek UK singles chart after selling just 5,278 copies.

The Girls were careful to release a single with a twist, so that no one could blame them if they got just a little too interested in how it would perform in the charts. All proceeds from the song are going to the BBC charity appeal 'Children in Need', but that hasn't helped the girls come close to knocking Leona Lewis' sassy new single 'Bleeding Heart' from its number one position in the top the coming Sunday. "There was so much hype surrounding the song but it has so far failed to match this in sales. However, there is still time for it to make a late surge for the number one spot", says a source.

However, it seems that hope has but faded completely. BBC Radio 1 bosses allegedly deemed the song so bad they relegated it to their C playlist, meaning it received poor airplay. George Ergatoudis, the station's head of music, said: "The song simply isn't strong enough. It would have been a B-side in their heyday". Ouch! That's definitely got to hurt. A lot.

The Girls sure have no love for the talented Leona (who shot to fame after winning last year's 'X Factor' TV talent show) as she also kept the Spice Girls' newly released "Greatest Hits" album off the top spot in the UK album charts last week with her debut album "Spirit", which sold a record-breaking 375,000 copies in seven days. You can read a more detailed review of Leona's album HERE.

Although the Spice Girls - Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Mel B, Victoria Beckham and Mel C - have failed to match expectations with their record sales, they have still managed to sell a staggering 750,000 tickets for their 40-date comeback world tour. The mammoth run of shows kick-off in Vancouver, Canada, on December 2nd - and better hope it's not going to disappoint, or there will be some very angry Spice Girls fans out there to deal with, and it won't be pleasant.
