Producer tells all

I'm rather sad while saying that The Sims movie is pretty much on track. Producer John Davis even offered a few more details regarding the project, which makes me think that we'll soon see another movie based on a videogame that will totally miss the point of the original intellectual property while using the name to get a hundred million dollars in ticket revenue.

When asked directly why a movie based on the Sims would be good, John Davis began, surprisingly, by saying that the game is very successful, with over 65 million copies sold. He's wildly off the mark, with Electronic Arts proudly saying that the franchise has moved more than 100 million copies. You'd think that the producer would know the stats of the game he's using to develop his movie.

When pressed for an answer regarding the way the movie is going to use the game as a basis, Davis talked about a plot involving “a young man, a 16 year old kid or a 14 year old kid and his friend” that somehow “get their hands on this thing called the Sims Infinity Pack, right, which kind of this very strange video game store which was there just for that moment, and seemingly wasn’t all that”. He added, “they realize is that they can scan their world in, because this is the most life like, real Sims game ever. And as they are playing this they are all of a sudden realizing is what they are playing on the game is having an effect on the real world. So in effect, through the game, they are able to control their world. It’s wish fulfillment, and obviously it turns against them”.

The similarities with the old “Weird Science” show don't stop here as one of the game characters will make it into the real world. The tone will be “Amblin-esque” with an emphasis on a “really fun adventure movie”.

I'm not convinced this can be a good movie that does justice to the Sims franchise. How does the plot sound to all the fans out there?
