You might be surprised, but many of the world's journalists have been very happy with Zinedine Zidane's gesture. And I'm not only talking about the Islamic or Algerian ones, but the European ones as well. No doubt about it, Materazzi insulted Zidane. But that's no reason why the Frenchman should have reacted the way he did. And that is a line that all journalists should follow, no matter their nationality. Otherwise, things might get personal.
Well,
as for the Algerian and Islamic newspapers, those I can understand. Especially after the latest pieces of news concerning the allegedly words that Materazzi said to Zidane, their reaction is somehow explainable. Here are just a couple of newspaper titles concerning the incident.
"Zidane has taken a bull shot because this Italian player, used to the dirty image in the Italian football stadiums, insulted him in the cruelest way. Yes indeed, the Arabic people have been humiliated for a very long time. And the history, if it will have the guts to denounce the Italian, will agree with the champion" - Le Temps.
"If any of us needed one more proof that the Frenchman is one of the greatest player ever, the World Cup final said it all. Only an epic hero, a titan, a Hercules can make such an impressive exit form the world of football" - Komsomolskaia Pravda.
"You should have laughed at this poor Italian's stupidity than take a shot at your own retirement" - La Presse.
Well, most of the articles written in the Islamic media show us a pretty obvious frustration way beyond the world of football. The only thing that these guys keep on forgetting is that the words "son of an Islamic terrorist whore" are invented by the English media. And they'd better keep that in mind before taking unnecessary shots at Materazzi.
