Are you a proud subscriber to one of those extremely useful metropolitan Wi-Fi networks, but for some reason, inside your house the signal is very weak, and thus you can't enjoy all that wireless connectivity in the comfort of your own home? If that's the case, then the device you're about to see might put an end to all your problems, as the MetroFlex DZ from Ruckus is a nifty little access gateway and Wi-Fi router that will provide a high degree of connectivity to outdoor Wi-Fi networks, while doubling as an extended range indoor 802.11b/g access point.
That's possible because the Ruckus MetroFlex DZ integrates Ruckus BeamFlex technology - a compact, internal
antenna array with multiple dual-polarized directional antenna elements capable of combining to form unique antenna patterns for diversity. This special antenna integrates smart-MIMO technology compatible with standard 802.11b/g metro Wi-Fi nodes, thus granting the device access to the best signal available. Moreover, the Ruckus MetroFlex DZ features DHCP server functionality, thus supporting multiple home PCs by automatically assigning dynamic IP addresses.
According to the manufacturers, one of the greatest advantages offered by the MetroFlex DZ is that it mitigates dynamically the interference generated by multi-path fading, other neighboring networks, wireless devices found in the close vicinity or even microwave ovens. Here are some of the device's most important technical specifications:
- dimensions: 14.2cm x 12.2cm x 7.5cm;
- weight: 220 grams;
- antenna: Internal software-configurable, dual-polarized antenna array with six directional, high-gain elements and 63 unique antenna patterns;
- Ethernet ports: 1 port, auto MDX, auto-sensing 10/100 Mbps, RJ-45;
- supports: automatic software updates via FTP, TFTP or WebUI;
- supported data rates: 54, 48, 36, 24, 18, 12, 11, 5.5, 2, 1 Mbps;
- supports: separate security configurations between WAN and LAN.
There's no word on the pricing or availability yet, but since citywide Wi-Fi networks will become a reality in quite a lot of cities during the next few years, this device will really come in handy, especially if its as good as its manufacturers tout it to be.
