As the “Twilight” phenomenon approached its end, in the months leading up to the release of the final installment, Robert Pattinson started taking steps towards distancing himself from sparkly vampire Edward Cullen. He’s been doing indies ever since, to more or less success – and his latest looks quite promising.

Directed by David Michod on a script by actor Joel Edgerton, “The Rover” sees Pattinson opposite Guy Pearce, playing two men thrown in a situation they can’t escape, in which their only chance of survival is working together even if they don’t want to.

The scene is a future recalling the “Mad Max” films, in which every man is on his own as humanity struggles to survive in total chaos. Pattinson plays a young man who is left behind by his brother and his posse after a car theft, presumably because he’s injured and he’s no use to them like that.

The guy whose car they stole (Pearce) picks him up from the side of the road and sets out to find the thieves and get his revenge. We can only guess at how this journey will end but, either way, it doesn’t look like Pattinson’s character will have it easy.

“The Rover” will open at the Cannes Film Festival 2014 and then in US theaters in June.
