We're in the middle of a 1920s revival - and no party is a party without the flapper dress

The flapper dress is unquestionably one of the staples of the 1920s revolution in women's fashion, which of course reflected a deeper change in mentality and attitude towards life in general. Of course, when we think of the flapper dress which is currently taking the fashion world by storm, we may be tempted to visualize a "Great Gatsby"-esque picture of skinny, flat chested women wearing straight, loose dresses, boyish haircuts (such as bobs), sequined headbands and art deco jewelry. However, despite the past few seasons' obsession with vintage fashion, this is not quite the case.

The flapper dress is back in fashion for several reasons. First, it's loose fitting, feminine and simple. Then, it can be paired up with any number of this season's must-have accessories, such as embroidered flats, T-bar pumps or sandals, boleros, capelets or leather jackets. Then, it's incredibly versatile and suitable for almost any type of figure. And finally, fashion icon and trendsetter in chief Kate Moss was spotted wearing such a dress at last year's Glastonbury festival in the UK, which basically green lit the flapper dress revival outside the catwalk.

Here is the trick. The new and improved flapper dresses are no longer sporting the traditional drop waist - or at least, it is no longer a compulsory requirement. Modern-day flapper dresses are straight and loose and can very well be combined with the equally fashionable "ruffles and frills" trend for maximum impact. A flapper dress that reaches down to your knees and is tiered from the waist down is a perfect hybrid of the feminine and the functional.

Embroidered flapper dresses are also extremely fashionable, but the sequins, beading, and fringing are paired up with cropped leather jackets or patent leather wide belts for a modern edge. Wear it with colored, layered beads or chunky wooden accessories and a pair of wedges and you'll be beyond cool. Also, don't forget that the matching sequined headbands are also making a comeback, worn over Victoria Beckham-style short bobs.
