Are you missing that old rotary phone you've grown up with, or do you simply have a thing for the retro-look? Well, if that's the case, then you should really take a look at the Port-O-Rotary, a portable rotary phone developed by Spark Fun Electronics. As the name says it, this device is actually an old-school rotary phone adapted for our modern times and modern communication technologies, which is able to make calls using a normal SIM card. Actually, it works in a very simple manner. The user has to simply insert his own SIM card in the phone, and than use freely his own phone account, but in a rather classical and cool manner (for example, incoming calls ring the original, loud, gong style metal bells while the dialing is made via the rotary). Here are some of the features that make the Port-O-Rotary such a cool and special device: - Size: that of a normal rotary phone; - Weight: aprox. 1 Kg; - Battery: 2000mAh Lithium-Polymer battery; - Battery life: up to 5 days; - Mini-cellular internal antenna (compatible with North American and European Frequencies); - GM862 cellular module from Telit, compatible with 900MHz/1800MHz/1900MHz cellular bands. The portable rotary phone will certainly make heads turn if you start using it in the street, but for quite a hefty price, though, because you'll have to cough up around 500 US dollars for one of this retro thingies. But since money are of no importance for the truly passionate, the Port-O-Rotary might really enjoy quite a high level of success on its special niche market.
