Hollywood certainly loves its underdogs, especially because of the promise of a new, highly lucrative franchise they come with. “The Purge” made a killing at the box office on the opening weekend, so talks are already underway to make a sequel for it.

Made for a measly (by Hollywood standards) budget of just $3 million (€2.2 million) and starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey (HBO’s Queen Cersei in “Game of Thrones”), “The Purge” brought down “Fast & Furious 6” from its top position at the North American box office.

In other words, of course they’re going to make a sequel!

“Producer Jason Blum’s company tweeted the news, and a Universal rep confirmed to EW that the studio is indeed on board for a sequel with Blum on as producer,” Entertainment Weekly writes.

“The Purge” earned $36.4 million (€27.4 million) in its first weekend in US theaters.
