Sequel to 2013 sleeper hit arrives in theaters next month, promises even more gore

“The Purge” was one of the biggest sleeper hits of 2013 so few wondered when a sequel was announced for this summer. Movies like this one are cheap to make because they’re still small, and they basically sell themselves by word of mouth, which, in the case of the original, worked like a charm.

With an idea that’s as horrifying as it’s original, it’s no wonder it did. “The Purge” details the events that happen on one night of every year, when the national Purge takes place all across the United States.

The Purge means that, for 12 hours, all crime, including murder, is legal. As we find in the brand new trailer for the sequel, “The Purge: Anarchy,” this is not the night to play hero if you happen to be outside of the house and not purging.

As if the idea of The Purge weren’t shocking enough, “Anarchy” also throws in a bunch of rich people hosting their very own version of the Hunger Games during these 12 hours of chaos. Speaking of which, the idea behind The Purge is that it offers an outlet for all violent inclinations so that, overall, crime is down all over the US for the rest of the year.

In “Anarchy,” Frank Grillo plays a man out for revenge, though, as we all know from other cliché movies, he’s warned that whatever act of violence he might commit, he won’t bring back the dead. He and other people are caught by that rich gang and unwillingly enlisted in a different version of The Purge than they were expecting.

The film opens in theaters on July 18, and also stars Michael K. Williams, Kiele Sanchez, Zach Gilford and Carmen Ejogo.
