Video game hardware developer and manufacturer Sony has announced that it will be launching a new headset and headphones combo for the PlayStation 3 home console during September, with the price tag for the new device set at 99.99 dollars.
The new PlayStation 3 Wireless Stereo Headset will include, despite its name, support for 7.1 virtual surround sound.
The new accessory will have buttons for volume and mute controls and gamers will be able to see the sound controls and the remaining battery level on the television set attached to the
PlayStation 3.
The package also includes a wireless adapter that goes into one of the USB slots of the home console.
It's not clear exactly when in September the new headset will be launched and whether it will be able to capture the imagination of gamers, most of whom seem to prefer to use headphones that are connected to their home consoles via a wire.
The initiative to launch a new headset for the PS3 might be seen as a sign of commitment to the home platform on the part of Sony, especially after a number of rumors have appeared that the company is already working on the PlayStation 4.
The PS3 has had a hard time lately because of the big security breach suffered by the PlayStation Network, which was brought down on April 20 and has only been restored in the last few weeks.
In the United States, the Sony platform is behind the Xbox 360 from
Microsoft in terms of sales and it's not clear how the Japanese company could make it more attractive to gamers, outside of a price cut.
At the moment, Sony says that it is focusing all its hardware development energies on the NGP, also known as the PlayStation Portable 2, which will be officially shown at the E3 trade conference and is said to be launched before the end of the year on at least one major market.
