The PC platform has, for a long time, been doomed and sentenced to a slow and painful death by a lot of analysts, who predicted that consoles would become the most important platforms in the world for video games.
But this is not true, at least according to big video game corporation Electronic Arts, which has revealed that
its products that reached the PC recorded some big growths, especially in the online medium, where, according to the chief financial officer of the company, Eric Brown, “the online part of our business is growing as much as 60% year over year.”
Also, the digital game distribution revenue from the EA Store has doubled year over year, managing to reach 80 million dollars in the last quarter and 400 million dollars in the past year. This has prompted Brown to say that, if the trend continues, the PC will be the most important platform for the company.
“This is a big year for us. In terms of distribution, the way we look at a lot what's happening in the future is, we've got probably a billion PCs out there in the world,” he says. “Very rapidly the PC is becoming the largest gaming platform in the world, just not in a packaged-good product. As you look at what that means in terms of distribution of product, we think that's incredibly exciting because it's going to open the market to new demographics, new countries and new types of gameplay.”
With companies such as EA continuing to back up
the PC, it seems that the platform is still fighting the good fight with the consoles and will still be around for quite some time now. Hopefully more and more developers and publishers will realize its potential and will bring their titles to it.
