Great games can be short, according to Ready at Dawn

Ready at Dawn, the developer of the new The Order: 1886 third-person shooter for the PS4, believes that a game's length doesn't result in automatic quality, addressing some of the criticism directed at the new game for its short campaign.

The Order: 1886 launched yesterday, February 20, worldwide for the PS4 and the last few weeks have been filled of controversies surrounding its short story campaign, which clocks in at around 5 to 6 hours, and the fact that it doesn't have any multiplayer or incentive to replay the experience.

Length doesn't result in quality, Ready at Dawn says

While talking with Eurogamer, Ready at Dawn Creative Director Ru Weerasuriya emphasizes that a game that needs many hours to complete isn't necessarily better than a title that can be finished in just a couple of hours.

He also highlights that there have been many cases in which shorter games ended up delivering more meaningful experiences than longer titles, so quality can easily come from just a few hours of gameplay, instead of tens or even hundreds of hours.

"I've had many more experiences of very short games that have floored me, that have left me dreaming of the things I could do after, more than the games that have lasted 15, 16, 20 or 30 hours, where I've just been like, okay, I played it through and I got what I wanted, but I didn't get more than what I was expecting. Sometimes I want to be floored, even if it's for a short amount of time," he explains.

While Weerasuriya doesn't specifically talk about The Order: 1886, it's clear that he and the rest of the team are quite confident in their latest project and its gameplay length. Unfortunately for the studio, critics begged to differ, as the PS4 game got panned in many reviews.

The game is currently available worldwide for the PS4.
