One of the greatest taboos of our civilization, that the bride must only wear white if she’s still “pure” has just been overcome, as figures recently published in the British media indicate. The number of maternity wedding gowns has increased considerably over the recent period, with most expectant mothers choosing to go for white on their grand day.

“It’s been amazing to watch our maternity bridal range take off. We’ve seen a steady growth in over the last few years, and it’s still growing. It’s really a reflection on our society: we’re much more open-minded than we once were.” says Tiffany London, founder of Tiffany Rose, a bridal shop that retails exclusively to mothers-to-be. As the British media is reporting, it’s no wonder that Mrs. London sounds so pleased, since she has good reason for it: sales for maternity gowns increased by more than 50% in 2008 as opposed to the previous year.

According to the numbers provided by Mrs. London, most of the brides who married in white despite being pregnant were aged between 25 and 29, and had lived with the groom before making the relationship official. This would also explain why there are so many women who choose to get married while pregnant, since the unborn child completes the already established family – with marriage being the only missing link, it is being said.

Of course, the fact that society no longer looks upon the issue of a pregnant wife wearing white on her wedding day with the same eyes also contributes to the increased number of maternity gowns sold. Tracey Wilkinson, founder of Expectant Brides, yet another website that sells wedding dresses for soon-to-be mothers, is fully aware of the influence society has on what the bride wears, but still happy to report that, for her too, the numbers have received a major boost.

“Before, if a couple fell pregnant, they might have thought about postponing the wedding, but now there’s so much pressure in our society, they don’t think they’ll have time after the baby to organize a wedding.” Mrs. Wilkinson said about the practicality of the “shotgun” wedding. “A few years ago you’d have struggled to find a white maternity wedding dress. Now, you can find one easily - and people are much less embarrassed about wearing one.” she further explained.
