The next version of Windows Live Hotmail is planned to hit by the end of 2008. The move is nothing more than the natural evolution of Microsoft's web-based email service developed under the Windows Live Platform. Having introduced Windows Live Hotmail in 2007, the Redmond company is gearing up for the next generation of the service. Microsoft failed to offer a timetable for the availability of Windows Live Hotmail v2.0, but did point to 2008 as the year of
its implementation. Ellie Powers, Windows Live Hotmail Program Manager, gave a preview of the company's plans from 2007, and now indicated the second half of this year for the next version of the service.

"We're back in the office and busy working on our plans for Hotmail in 2008. Thanks to our many users out there who have celebrated many milestones with us! On January 1, 2007, we were still in beta. On January 1, 2006, we were just releasing the beta to countries outside of the United States and United Kingdom. On January 1, 2005, we didn't have public beta users. By this time next year, we want Windows Live Hotmail to go even farther in helping you connect with your family and friends and managing information in today's busy world", Powers revealed (emphasis added).

With Windows Live Hotmail, users are able to enjoy a web email offering a minimum of 5 GB of storage at no cost. One of the most relevant aspects in the evolution from MSN to Windows Live is the graphical user interface, on top of the changes under the hood. In this manner, Windows Live Hotmail offers not only a completely new code base, but also a rich and interactive AJAX user interface. Powers explained in the past that Microsoft has taken the decision to focus on Windows Live Hotmail, rebuilding the service from scratch, due to the inflexibility of the MSN Hotmail code base. At this point in time, there is still no word as to what the Redmond company is cooking for the next version of Windows Live Hotmail.
