While Canonical failed once again to deliver that "professional-looking theme" everyone was expecting (promised since the time when Ubuntu 9.10 was still under development), it introduced some nice themes created by various users of the community for the upcoming release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx): Ambiance and Radiance. Today, we announce the new wallpapers added by Canonical in Lucid Lynx.

There are sixteen wallpapers in total, for the new Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) release, and most of them are nature related. In order of appearance, their names are: Curlsby Candy, Busqueda Nocturna, Yellow flower, Daisy, Cornered, FallDrops/AncientLight, Fluffodome, Icy stones 2, Maraetai before sunrise, BosqueTK, Out of focus, Pointy, In the dark Redux, Smooth Moment and Warm lights. We've also added the default wallpaper. Congrats to the authors of these beautiful photographs!

On April 29th, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) will become the 12th release of the Ubuntu operating system.

Among some of the interesting features that will be present in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx), we can mention the newly released GNOME 2.30 desktop environment, which brings lots and lots of improvements in many areas, such as Nautilus, Empathy, Evolution, Tomboy, Totem, Rhythmbox, and many more. Lucid's kernel packages will be based on Linux kernel 2.6.32, and applications such as Oracle's OpenOffice.org 3.2, Mozilla Firefox 3.6, Transmission 1.92 or Pidgin 2.6.6, Mozilla Thunderbird 3 and The GIMP 2.6.8 (all three available from the repositories) will also be present in the final version of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx).

Don't forget to visit our website next Thursday (April 22nd) for a detailed report on the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) RC release, where we will unveil more of Lucid's new features!

I tried 10.04 beta 2. It definitely shows promise and I'm looking forward to the completed version. However I had problems with Opera crashing and freezing up. Also didn't like the default black menu bar with white lettering or the black menus in Firefox and Chrome. That's why I was using Opera because, for some reason, its drop down menus were white with black lettering. Easier for me to see.

Yes, I know I could have changed the theme but I was just too annoyed to do it. Why would they change the browser menus anyway?

Also really hated having the close and minimise buttons on the left side rather than the right. Why Canonical changed that I'll never understand. Fortunately it's not hard to move the buttons back over to the right side where (IMHO) they should be. It's interesting to note that Chromes buttons were on the right by default. Weird ...

:-)) they moved buttons on left becouse they will place new buttons on right side... i think that they will place menu (File, Edit, View,...) on right so we will have more space..., and the black menus can't be change becouse every menu use theme... and i like more white menus... but i think that every browser should make a different UI for ubuntu ... they use Windows UI for Ubuntu and Linux...

this looks good. now first we should understand something, Ubuntu is a community driven "FREE" OS. its not like any corporate powered proprietary software. if a "FREE" software can deliver stability than any paid ones, than that is more important. in Ubuntu i got the freedom to change it in a way i want it to look and act. thats the freedom i enjoy and i love ubuntu for that freedom.

Abiance and Radiance are quite professional looking in my book.
Looks far better than anything on Windows.
Still in beta too.

Does this author even read the same things she writes?

Not professional, BUT

..."Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) will be definitely a stable, secure, reliable and good-looking operating system! "...

let's see, what's your measure of professional, then?

Catchy phrasing, but the article does not support the claim made, nor even attempt to make a case for the claim. Please either write about what you are talking about, or use some sort of title that at least addresses your assertions.

@aby: Except it is corporate powered. Canonical is backing it and is handling a good portion of the development themselves. Just because its "free" doesn't mean anything. Canonical is a service-based company. Thus they sell things like tech support to companies using their product.

I think all of the wallpapers are superb; however, like Clif I have a serious problem with the author's comment, "While Canonical failed once again to deliver that "professional-looking theme".

When are these self proclaimed 'Technology Critics' going to stop thinking their person opinions are facts or even objective descriptive statements. I installed Lucid 10.04 on a laptop earlier this week and its GUI and general appearance looks as "professional" as any of the machines currently sitting on the shelf at Staples or Wal-mart.

If the author can not offer constructive criticism or a simple curosry summary of the OS then kindly be quiet.
