During its highly anticipated Spring Event, Apple unveiled its new 12-inch MacBook air laptop which surprised many users. The new notebook is taking advantage of the new USB standard called the USB Type-C.

The USB Type-C connector was originally announced in late 2013 and shared some similarities with Apple’s Lightning connector, meaning that it was reversible, in a sense that one would be able to fit it in regardless of the way it was facing up.

While it’s pretty unclear whether future iOS devices will adopt this standard, Google’s new Chromebook Pixel is one of the first few devices to have been announced with the standard. On top of that Google has been heard promising that USB Type-C will be making it into future Android devices too.

New info suggests the Type-C connector is actually an Apple affair

Now an interesting tidbit related to the Type-C connector has surfaced online, curtsey of famed Apple insider John Gruber who talked about the controversial standard in his recent podcast.

During the latest episode of The Talk Show, Gruber claimed that he’s heard that USB-C was actually invented by Apple.

He goes on to comment the political nature of the situations saying that Apple won’t come out and claim credit for the invention anytime soon. But the Cupertino tech giant gave USB-C to the standard bodies because they really want to see it become a standard feature of upcoming mobile devices.

So what do you guys think? Would it really be all that surprising if it turned out that the USB Type-C standard was invented by good old Apple?

If you missed our earlier coverage on the new MacBook, this is as good a place as any to remind that you that the new 12-inch laptop offers 2,304 x 1,440 pixel resolution (Retina class display) and a new trackpad setup called Force Touchpad.

As for hardware, Apple is using the services of Intel’s new Core M chips (1.2GHz dual-core with Intel HD Graphics 5300), meaning the laptop enjoys a fanless design.

A new system of layered batteries has been fitted inside of the new MacBook, allowing the notebook to sustain a life cycle of up to 9 hours.
