MapShare, FM Transmitter and other goodies

TomTom is one of the most important manufacturers on the GPS navigation system's market, providing an extensive line-up of products, as well as some of the best navigation maps around. One of the most interesting things about this company is the fact that they're always trying to improve their products and come up with all sorts of navigation-related innovations, one such innovation being the one implemented starting with the TomTom GO 720 model, namely the Map Share.

The greatest thing about this new technology is the fact that it allows users to improve their own navigation maps. Thus, by using the TomTom Map Share, drivers will be able to modify their own maps, but also benefit from all other users' improvements daily, automatically and easily via the TomTom HOME, a desktop application available for free from the company. And since, at least according to the company's own statement, TomTom has the most extensive database of users (over 10 millions), these improvements might prove to be extremely useful, leading to one of the most complete and updated navigation systems available on the market.

The people from TomTom are quite aware of this, as Jocelyn Vigreux, president of TomTom Inc., states: "With this introduction, we are making unique new features and technologies available to our users to deliver the highest performing, most cutting-edge satellite navigation solutions available on the market today. Our unique TomTom Map Share technology harnesses the power of our large installed user base for the benefit of all our users.", concluding that "the new TomTom GO 720 sets the standard in smart car navigation."

And since I've talked about the features offered by the GO 720, but not about the device itself, take a look at this thing's spec sheet:

- dimensions: 11.93 cm x 8.12 cm x 2.28 cm; - weight: 218.29 cm; - CPU: 400 Mhz; - RAM: 64 MB, SDRAM; - display: 4.3-inch LCD (WQVGA: 480*272 pixels) with touchscreen capabilities; - battery: Lithium-polymer (5 hours operation); - includes: high-sensitivity GPS receiver; - incorporates: FM transmitter; - features: an optimized integrated microphone and speaker for high quality hands-free functionality; - sports: a Bluetooth communication chip; - optional accessory: RDS-TMC traffic information receiver.

The TomTom GO 720 will be available for around 500 US dollars starting in July, and for now will be retailed only in North America and Canada (looks like the rest of the world will have to wait some more for all those goodies that comes packed with this thing).

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .
