Or at least close enough

The New Super Mario Bros Wii should have the same long-lasting effect as the DS version of the game. According to Shigeru Miyamoto, this Mario will continue to keep sales up and be a successful title well after its original release time frame. Second only to the Pokemon Diamond & Pearl, the DS New Super Mario Bros has proved to be an immense hit for Nintendo. Its Wii multiplayer remake will come to Japan on December 3 and will probably live up to the name of the original title.

A Tokyo-based retailer, Games Maya, is often involved in official events for all sorts of games and was the host of the latest New Super Mario Bros Wii showcasing. Here, Shigeru Miyamoto offered a live gameplay session for all those present. According to him, “It's a Mario that will continue selling even after one year has passed." This would generally be regarded as a very vague and unreliable statement, especial since any developer will boast his own product and is bound to be more than just pleased with it.

But the previous accomplishments of New Super Mario Bros come to support his words. The DS game sold around 850.000 copies in the first week alone in Japan and went on to reach the 5.5 million threshold. Not only that, but most of Nintendo's games have proven to continue to sell well after the hype of the launch period died down. Wii Fit and Wii Sports have respected this tradition as well when it comes to sales. The one game that hasn't really matched this pattern would be Super Mario Galaxy and maybe Miyamoto was trying to set apart the Wii port from this isolated incident.

The game does seem to keep that arcade addiction that the DS version managed to implement into its gameplay and will probably do just as well on the Wii as New Super Mario Bros did on the handheld. The title should reach the states in November, so until then we can only wait and hope that this will prove to be another game that will keep our eyes pinned to the television screen for a long time.
