Stonefish or Synanceia are carnivorous ray-finned fish with venomous spines, and are considered some of the most venomous fish in the world. Their venom is fatal to humans.

These fish are found in the Indian Ocean, the western and central Pacific Ocean, and the Indonesian seas, as well as the Florida coast and the Caribbean, Wikipedia informs. Its main habitat is on or near coral reefs or in estuaries, in marine or estuarine waters.

The stonefish lives on reef bottoms, and it is so well adapted and camouflaged, that it could be mistaken for a rock. Part of its camouflage technique is lingering around dull colored plants, rocks, in the mud or in the sand.

Swimmers usually cannot tell the fish apart from their surroundings, and step on them, triggering a sting. The fish injects venom proportionally to the amount of pressure it felt.
