McPheters & Company has released the iMonitor List of Best Magazine Apps for iPad based on design, functionality, and use of rich media content.

A consulting and research company that helps other companies in the areas of strategic planning, media research, and accountability metrics, McPheters & Company uses its iMonitor database (which contains more than 100 metrics on each app) to evaluate trends and best practices in app development and associated business models.

The system also helps out with assessing competitive performance and document app quality.

The list is based on the iMonitor rating system which, for its part, scores each app by ranking cool design elements, ease of use, relevant content, richness in detail, and more.

iMonitor has evaluated thousands of apps. The list included in the latest report (in the latest issue of FIPP's Magazine World) promotes la creme de la creme of iPad magazines.

“The apps on this list, which come from a variety of countries, companies, and developers, score in the top percentile of the more than 5000 apps evaluated by iMonitor since its inception in 2010,” McPheters & Company said in a report this week.

The list mentions Allure Magazine (by Conde Nast), Bloomberg Businessweek+, CHIP (by Hubert Burda Media), evo Magazine (by Dennis Publishing), Focus Magazine (by Immediate Media Company), Golf Digest Magazine (also by Conde Nast), Martha Stewart Everyday Food Magazine (by the publisher with the same name), National Geographic Magazine, Newsweek (by The Newsweek/Daily Beast Company LLC), Revista Galileu (by Brazil’s Editora Globo SA), and WIRED Magazine, to highlight the most important titles.

According to CEO Rebecca McPheters, "As the number of magazine apps has exploded, the bar for outstanding performance has constantly evolved.  These apps are each doing an outstanding job of fully-leveraging the iPad's capabilities to enhance the user experience and expand upon the services traditionally offered to readers by printed publications."
