The Martyr Lamp from Play Coalition

You must admit that the idea behind the Martyr Lamp from Play Coalition is a truly neat and funny one, even though it may look a tad confusing in the first place. Now, there are many similarly-themed lamps and lighting gadgets each with its own particularity and fun-degree; what seemed very attractive about this one was the fact that almost nobody could tell from the start whether the little man is clasping the plug so that he won't fall or trying to unplug the bulb and thus save some energy.

Well, I admit that the second scenario could indeed sound a little silly: what's the point in making a lamp which (at least, theoretically) would try to unplug itself? Well, since we're talking open-minded design ideas, maybe such a green statement isn't that exaggerated after all.

But after reading that Play Coalition themselves speak about the Martyr Lamp in terms of the “energy saving fundamentalist”, things are quite clear: the little man is desperately trying to unplug the lamp thus leaving you in the dark (but saving some bucks off your energy bills). The idea is as pretty and fun as you can get and surely there are a lot of individuals who are looking forward to meeting the Martyr Lamp on the shelves of corner shops.

The only downside would be the lack of protective features, for both the entire lamp and for the bulb itself. Wall outlets are usually located near the floor and accidents can happen anytime, with us being in a hurry, our kids wandering around the place and so on. On the other hand, it looks like the name has been chosen quite wisely, due to the rather hazardous environment the little man must work in and the dangers lurking him every time a person passes by.

I'd really go for such a lamp, especially if Play Coalition could design a protective helmet for the guy. Just in case.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .
