The latest Johnny Depp movie swept away all competition this weekend, becoming the first one to top, just in two days, the $100 million limit. Actually, the 'Pirates' cashed more than the record limit; it made $132 million domestically, thus becoming the biggest seller ever.
On Friday, the opening of the 'Dead Man's Chest' made more than the first part did in 2003 over the whole weekend, namely $55 million (as compared to $46.6 million). 'Superman Returns' stood absolutely no chance in front of the all-stars cast, first and foremost because it had no such famous names as Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley included.
The movie is said to appeal to a large number of the population, regardless their age, sex or race, as it comprises a mixture of elements that make it so much fun to watch. Just in the United States, huge lines were formed outside every cinema and tickets were selling like candy. Yet, more than 58% of the viewers were women who admitted that they came to see 'Dead Man's Chest' because of the wacky Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Depp.
It seems clear now that all those mixed reviews were nothing but mere speculations, taking into consideration the fact that the movie managed to earn more than 'Spider-Man', 'Fantastic Four', 'Superman Returns' (whose box-office earnings started to go down immediately after the past weekend) and 'Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith'.
The 'Dead Man's Chest' debut was impressive and critics say that it is very likely that the good days are just beginning, which makes it a potential candidate for the title of best-seller movie ever in the history of cinematography.
