London Mayor Boris Johnson is dead set on improving on the city's ecological footprint. He is so determined to slash local carbon emissions by 60% by 2025 that he is now thinking about having people keep warm during the winter months with the heat let out by the London Underground.

Fear not, the mayor is not considering forcing people to sleep in the subway.

On the contrary, what he means to do is invest in technologies that will make it possible to collect whatever excess heat the Tube produces and funnel it into roughly 500 local homes.

According to Grist, the heat will be collected both from subway tunnels and from an electric substation.

The initiative is the first of its kind in Europe, and Mayor Boris Johnson is confident that, once the project is implemented, carbon emissions will drop by at least 500 tons annually.

What's more, he expects that people living in the homes targeted by this initiative will have less impressive energy bills to deal with during wintertime.
