The lightest mobile phone ever created by mankind was officially declared modu, as a group of Guinness World Records judges found the device to only weigh exactly 40.1 grams (or 1.41 ounces, for the US citizens
that don't really know what a gram is).

The modu phone was first announced during MWC 2008, in February, and it comes as a revolutionary concept for the mobile industry. Created by an Israeli company headed by Dov Moran (founder of msystems Ltd., the inventors of the USB Flash Drive and the FlashDisk), modu is very user-friendly and can be integrated into "modu jackets", which are different phone cases that change the device's appearance and functionality. The modu handset is actually a core for all its jackets and can be turned into a multimedia phone, a business PDA with QWERTY keypad, a fashion handset, a navigation device and so on. Although it can be combined with many external jackets, modu can also function as a stand-alone mobile phone, this being the main reason why it was declared the lightest handset in the world.

Talking about the Guinness World award announced today, Zack Weisfeld, VP Marketing of

modu, declared: "The Guinness World Record is a great achievement for a team that has worked tirelessly to take modu from the drawing board to producing full working devices in less than a year. From the outset, modu's tiny dimensions and super light weight have been fundamental to delivering the disruptive, modular communication concept that modu embodies."
Furthermore, Mr. Zack Weisfeld added: "modu has already made a huge impact since its launch at MWC, with mobile network operators, consumer electronics manufacturers and other potential partners all attracted by our revolutionary approach."

The modu handset should hit the market starting the fourth quarter of 2008 for a retail price of about $300 (or 190 Euro) and it will come with two standard jackets. Various other modu jackets will also be available, providing users with multiple choices for the tiny mobile phone.
