Fans were very enthusiastic when, last year, they were told Johnny Depp was to star in the new 'Shantaram' movie, based on Gregory David Roberts's novel with the same name.
It was meant to depict the life of a drug-addict and robber that fleas to Bombay and impersonates a doctor, without having a proper license, a character perfectly suited for the actor.
Johnny was so set on this screening that, reportedly, Warner Bros paid $2 million for the rights of the story that was to be directed by the Australian Peter Wier.
Now, the movie is in danger of being canceled altogether as director and star couldn't come to an agreement concerning the adaptation.
There are two sides as to why this happened: on one hand, artistic differences between Depp and Wier might be the cause for the misunderstanding and recent departure of the producer from the project. Rumors say that the actor's own view didn't quite correspond to that of the director, so they parted on amiable terms. On the other hand, they say that Wier felt so left out, having no one on his side that, he decided willingly to leave.
The movie was programmed to be released in March 2007, but now the future of 'Shantaram' is decidedly rather blurry.
