Without a doubt one of the biggest reveals during last weekend’s 2011 Video Game Awards was The Last of Us, the survival shooter that’s being made by Naughty Dog, the studio behind very popular franchises like Uncharted or Jak and Daxter.

[ADMARk=1]We already got to check out the impressive trailer for the game, as well as learn the first actual details from the studio itself, which detailed the two main characters we saw in the video, Joel, a grown-up man, and Ellie, a teenage girl, who both need to survive in a seemingly post apocalyptic scenario.

According to Neil Druckmann, the game’s creative director, Joel starts off as a “vicious survivor” but “when he meets this girl, she is his one chance at redemption, that kind of arc has always been intriguing."

The video presented the already established relationship between these two characters, with Joel and Ellie foraging for supplies in buildings while trying to stay one step ahead of the mob of zombie-like monsters.

According to Christophe Balestra, the co-president of Naughty Dog, The Last of Us is a different kind of experience, which is aimed at taking games that much closer to movies in terms of narrative and even gameplay.

"We're trying to move the medium of video games into an area elevated in the same manner of respect of film," Balestra says. "We want to redefine what our medium is even called. 'Video game' is not an accurate name anymore. It is not necessarily a game with rules and a winner and a loser. It's an experience."

The Last of Us is currently expected to appear, according to USA Today, in late 2012 or early 2013, exclusively for the PlayStation 3, just like previous games made by Naughty Dog. Until then, we can hope that more details will be made available as soon as possible.
