The new title might have pre-rendered cut scenes, according to Naughty Dog

Naughty Dog has shed even more light on its upcoming The Last of Us Remastered Edition for PS4, confirming that the new title looks great at a higher framerate than the original 30fps on PS3, and that it might feature pre-rendered cut scenes at a higher resolution.

The Last of Us came out last year for the PlayStation 3 platform, delivering a great experience for all fans of developer Naughty Dog. The survival game had an impressive story, intense gameplay, and an addictive multiplayer.

Now, Naughty Dog is bringing the experience to the PlayStation 4 console complete with remastered visuals at a full HD 1080p resolution, not to mention all the downloadable content released for the original PS3 edition, from multiplayer items to the story-based Left Behind expansion.

After the official announcement and a confirmation that the team was targeting a 60fps framerate instead of the 30fps one seen on PS3, Naughty Dog Community Strategist Arne Meyer made some more statements on NeoGAF.

In terms of the debate between 30fps and 60fps, Meyer said that the game would still feel great at a higher framerate, so those who claim that a lower framerate makes the game feel more cinematic shouldn't be afraid of the upgrade.

"30hz, 60hz, and anything in between is more than just about being cinematic, it’s about the underlying systems that affect gameplay and how they refresh. Your body/eye can’t compensate for that like it does when watching 24fps source material on film," he said.

"Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge cinephile and buy Criterions, watch things in as original format as possible, etc., but in games, as most of us know, the higher the frame rate you can pull out, the better the overall experience, generally speaking."

Meyer also claimed that, while work is still underway on the game's PS4 edition, the cut scenes will probably remain pre-rendered, as the game won't try to pull them off in real time.

"That’s all still in progress, but they were at least be re-rendered in the higher 1080p resolution plus maybe whatever else we can add. I highly doubt we’d do them real-time based on our past history with cinematics, so I wouldn’t hold my breath for that."

"Frankly, the visual fidelity of our PS3 cinematics were pretty fantastic. I’d love to see the gang push beyond that, but it is a pretty high bar to start from! As we get closer to release, etc., we can probably shed some more light on all this."

The Last of Us: Remastered for PS4 has received a summer release window but, so far, it seems that Naughty Dog isn't ready to narrow it down.
