The Linux Mint community is proud to announce the final release of Linux Mint 4.0 (codenamed Daryna) KDE Edition. But don't get too excited, because this release is not based on the brand-new KDE 4 desktop. Being based on Celena KDE CE and compatible with the Ubuntu Gutsy repositories, it brings new software and technologies, such as:

■ Linux kernel 2.6.22-14 ■ KDE 3.5.8 ■ OpenOffice.org 2.3.0 ■ Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0 ■ Mozilla Sunbird 0.7

Through the Mint-powered tools we can notice:

■ mintInstall ■ mintwifi ■ mintUpdate ■ mintAssistant ■ mintUpload (done via Konqueror --> right click file --> Actions --> Upload file)

There are also 'minted' versions of Firefox and Sunbird!

Linux Mint Daryna KDE CE is a DVD only release, but don't despond, as the Linux Mint Community also announced the release of the miniKDE version, for all of you who don't have a DVD-ROM drive. The following applications are not available in the miniKDE edition:

InkScape, Hugin, Scribus, KMymoney2, K9copy, The GIMP, libicu34, kde-icons-mono, ttf-arabeyes, OpenOffice.org, diveintopython, kde-icons-nuvox, kaffeine, knotes, kdepim*. Moreover, some documentation and some wallpapers were also deleted.

Known issues in Daryna KDE

■ When shutting down or restarting the live CD, it will freeze about 25% of the time at the last step. I had this problem with Gutsy too and have not found a fix for it. This happens more in virtual machines than in real ones. ■ After adding a new user log in as them and check their kmix settings because they will have no sound. Check the output and PCM levels. ■ If you use a separate partition for /boot you will not get a graphical boot. To fix this, copy /etc/grub/message.mint to /boot/grub/, edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and change gfxboot=/grub/message.mint

Why should you choose Linux Mint Daryna?

■ Out of the box multimedia support ■ Microsoft Windows Integration (Dual-boot, NTFS read/write support, Migration Assistant) ■ One-Click install system (Linux Mint Software Portal, mintInstall) ■ Easy file-sharing (mintUpload) ■ Desktop features, Control Center, mintMenu ■ 3D Effects ■ Great configuration tools ■ Great selection of default applications (OpenOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, Gimp, Pidgin, XChat, Amarok..etc) ■ Solid package base (Google Earth, Picasa, Skype, a lot of important software present in the repositories or in the Linux Mint Software Portal, compatibility with all Ubuntu Feisty repositories and most Debian packages)
