The Italian "Calciopoli" scandal is coming to an end. Yesterday, the chief of the commission that analyzed the "Juventus affair", Francesco Borielli, handed over the final report of the investigations to Stefano Palazzi. He will have to decide, ultimately, which of the investigated individuals over the past 6 weeks will have to face criminal charges in the days to come. We all know that Juventus, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio are in danger of spending their next season in Serie B.
Francesco Borielli's final report has a number of 180 to 190 pages, and contains every little detail concerning the players, referees, chiefs and coaches involved in the scandal. Along with their testimonies, the report also contains the personal observations of Borielli. Still, he was unable to give personal pieces of advice concerning the decisions that have to be made.
Borielli did not answer any other questions of the media about the report, leaving the Italian Football Federation headquarters without saying a word. Anyway, the power of decision rests now only in the hands of Palazzi. If he decides that certain persons involved in the scandal should face criminal charges - and that is most likely to happen - then those individuals would have to face trials between the 26th and 27th of June. After being heard by a judge, the final decision will be announced between the 7th and the 9th of July, right before the World Cup final kicks off - if Italy is to qualify for the final in Germany, some players might find themselves in the situation of facing criminal charges before playing the most important game of their lives.
Either way, Borielli's press release wanted to assure all the football supporters in Italy that the "calico" in Serie A is not corrupt, but "some roots are". As it stands right now, the 9th of July, the day that will bring us the new - or same - world champion, will also be the day in which the Italian football will name its corrupt individuals. We will then know whether Juventus and Fiorentina will play in Serie B, or if AC Milan had anything to do with the scandal.
