The Iraqi officials announced yesterday the results of the referendum in which the population expressed their vote regarding the adoption of a US backed constitution. Iraq's Electoral Commission revealed that on October 15th, 79% voted in favor of the new constitution, while 21% voted against.
According to Reuters, the constitution's final results confirmed
that only two of Iraq's 18 provinces, the insurgent stronghold of Anbar in the west and Saddam Hussein's home region of Salahaddin, had mustered a "No" vote of at least two-thirds.
If an additional province had voted against, the project would have been rejected and although the analysts expected the Nineveh province to be the third one (because of the large Sunni population), only 55% of the inhabitants voted "No".
The Sunni insurgents showed their discontent regarding this referendum by launching several terrorist acts, the boldest one being the one which took place two days ago, when three suicide bombers detonated three cars near the Palestine and Sheraton hotels.
According to the British agency, Iraq's National Security Adviser Mowaffaq al-Rubaie blamed the hotel attack on Jordanian Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's al Qaeda in Iraq.
