Versatile email app promises to beat everyone in its league

Dropbox-owned Mailbox just got some major enhancements this week. For starters, it received a new update on iOS platforms with push notification fixes and other stuff. Secondly, the glorious Mac client is here.

To cut a long story short, Mailbox initially started as its own game, but greedy old Dropbox quickly took notice of its incredible versatility and decided to engulf it. We kid, they’re not greedy.

They’re just good at expanding their business. Dropbox now runs the show, and they couldn’t have done a better job with the app, both on the mobile front and on the desktop, more recently.

Mailbox 2.3.1 for iOS

The mobile client got a brief but important update this week consisting of a way to customize your swipes, which is a major leg up considering that some people want to rapidly move email somewhere, while others want to quickly forward or delete email, and so on and so forth. People want their email experience as personal as possible, and Mailbox currently offers the edge in this area.

Another thing Mailbox got on the mobile front this week is UI optimizations for the latest iPhones. Hallelujah! Other enhancements include push notification fixes for iOS 8 and email rendering fixes. On to the desktop!

Mac beta available for download

After deploying the iOS update, the Mailbox team took to Twitter to announce that the desktop experience is now finally available to Mac users everywhere in the form of a free beta that they can download and use instantly.

We can tell you right off the bat that Mailbox is a real joy to use on your Mac. You get a lot of gesture input, endless options just a flick away in any message, and a real focus on messaging with as little distraction as possible. What you’ve come to love on the iOS client is available in the Mac client too, with lots of other features that take advantage of the desktop environment.

One thing we could say needs tweaking is the washed-out UI. It’s not bad, and we seriously like its design over Apple’s Mail app (at least in Mavericks), but it looks a little too shallow. Especially in the left pane.

Your unified inbox is appropriately called Mailbox, and you can handle multiple accounts from the same window, hassle-free. The Mailbox download is free and there’s no word on how the final version will be offered, but we’re guessing they won’t charge a dime. Fingers crossed for that!
