“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” is one of the most anticipated films of the year and it's also probably one of the franchises with the largest fanbase. Which would explain why Warner Bros., the distributor of the film, chose to add the option of “super tickets” for cinema viewing.

The film opened on Wednesday, December 11, at midnight, in the US and Canada, and it offered viewers the option of getting a $40 (€29.04) ticket which included a plush seat in a big-screen cinema, an advance online copy for mobile or home viewing, and an online copy of the first film “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”

The second part of the prequel trilogy “The Desolation of Smaug” has received positive initial reviews, saying it's got a little more action than the previous one, where it was more about setting the mood than telling the story.

It will be interesting to see how many people will opt for this “super ticket” that is said to bring extra revenue not only to the studio but also to cinemas, which have been offered for the first time an opportunity to participate in the ancillary business.
