A lamp to help you save your life

When a fire starts and spreads inside a building and smoke fills the rooms and hallways, one major problem can represent a very serious hazard: not seeing your way towards the exit as you evacuate the premises. This is one of the things that can cause massive injuries and even victims during an evacuation in a fire situation – people tend to panic anyway, and the fact that the smoke screens their vision and they can't find the exit in a glimpse only makes things worse.

Halo is a special emergency lamp developed by designers FooWei Zen and Chua Wenfong, and its most interesting and helpful feature is that it points out the right direction when you’re running for your life during a fire in your building.

Easy to install in any location, the Halo lamp is equally useful during blackouts; it uses LED lights so it can cast a special image on the floor, actually showing you the direction to follow to the nearest exit. This is especially useful since, in case of fires producing a lot of smoke, when people are advised to crawl close to the floor (where the smoke is less thick), the projected image will be more visible and thus more helpful.

In addition, the light will pulsate in the direction of the exit, making it easier to draw attention in such risky circumstances. This gadget can be of real use as it has already been documented that in emergency situations, most people seem to slightly lose focus and easily get lost or take the wrong direction in hallways and other similar passages.

It remains to be seen whether the LED lights the two designers plan to use are that powerful enough so that their beams can actually be projected on the floor through the smoke and not be just a roundish glow with an even more confusing, eerie aura.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .
