It should be right up there with music and movies

The gaming industry is slowly, but surely, beginning to become more and more mainstream and an integral part of our everyday lives. Thanks to the current console generation, the market has devices for every type of consumer, be it casual or hardcore, experienced or new to the whole concept.

But, even though a lot of people are into gaming, the whole industry still suffers from prejudices and misconceptions, at least according to Xbox 360 Marketing Manager for Europe, David Gosen, who has talked with MCV about how the industry deserves more respect from the society.

“It frustrates me that from a public standpoint, the industry still hasn’t got the stature, credibility and cut through that we all deserve. I still get the sense we’re sandwiched somewhere between corporate bankers and taxmen in terms of society’s general perception. There’s been improvement, but not the quantum leap there should have been. We should be as loved as Hollywood is or the music industry is. Yet we are not. That’s not because people aren’t trying. But there seems to be a barrier of acceptance.”

Gosen goes on to say that everyone should realize the impact the gaming industry has on the economy and on the whole world. Governments should take a lot of measures in order to encourage this industry, because it has proven during these tough times that it can hold its own and will continue to make a profit thanks to the big number of gamers across the world, Gosen believes.

Hopefully, his concerns will be heard by others and we will all be able to see the industry grow even more and eventually surpass both movies and music in terms of entertainment value. With this, a new found respect for games and gamers will be something more than welcome by a lot of people.
